The firewall usually doesn’t start for one of four reasons: Aegisrook isn’t in the Applications folder, it wasn’t approved in System Settings, Don’t Allow was clicked in the network window, or another firewall app is in the way. Each has a quick fix.
Aegisrook isn’t in the Applications folder
The firewall can only be installed from the Applications folder. If Aegisrook is running from anywhere else, such as Downloads or the disk image, the Firewall tab says Move Aegisrook to the Applications folder. Quit it, drag it to Applications, and open it from there.
It wasn’t approved in System Settings
If the Firewall tab says Waiting for your approval, open System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions, scroll to the extensions, click the Info button (ⓘ) next to Network Extensions and make sure Aegisrook is turned on. If you don’t see Network Extensions, switch the list from By App to By Category. Enter your password if asked.
Don’t Allow was clicked
If Aegisrook says macOS didn’t allow the firewall to start, the network window was declined. Click Show Me How in the Firewall tab, then Try Again in the guide. When “Aegisrook” Would Like to Filter Network Content appears, click Allow, the grey button on the left.
Another firewall is running
Two firewalls asking about the same connection gets confusing, and each one can block what the other allowed. If you use Little Snitch, LuLu or another firewall, either turn that one off or keep Aegisrook’s firewall off. The rest of Aegisrook works either way.
A work Mac
On a Mac managed by an employer or school, the organisation’s settings can stop you approving extensions that it hasn’t allowed. If the approval switch is missing or greyed out, ask your IT department.
Still not working
- Restart your Mac.
- Open Aegisrook, click Set Up Firewall… or Show Me How in the Firewall tab, and follow the guide again.
- If it still fails, choose Help › Save Diagnostics… and contact us. We’ll ask for the file if we need it.
